Project - Blue Jumper

18 Jan 26

I have a jumper’s worth of yarn also gifted as leftovers, with which I’m going to make a new jumper for myself. I’m using a pattern I’ve already made before, the Wannabe Sweater by Wool and the Gang. Although I’m going to knit the main body in the round to avoid some seaming. I’ve just started with the bottom ribbing, and I feel like it’s already much too wide… So I might have to start again.

This week, I was away for work for most of it, so I focused on travel knitting the blue jumper I’ve started. It’s going well; the pattern says to do front and back panels, but I’m doing both sections in the round, so there are no seams down the middle. I did have to restart at some point when I realised it was way too big. I didn’t do a gauge swatch for the ribbing, as it turned out to be a very different equation from the main stockinette swatch. I’ve severely had to reduce the number of stitches on the ribbing. I think the yarn is much thicker than what is in the pattern. Anyways, good progress made.

I’ve been knitting a lot in the evenings, working on the jumper. The bottom ribbing is probably a bit too tight, so it puffs out on the body. Hopefully, I can stretch the ribbing during blocking. Generally, I prefer a tighter rib on the waist, but in this case, it might be too much. The front and back parts are done and I’m onto the collar, then I need to knit the sleeves. Maybe by next week I’ll have it finished. It’s simple stocknette all the way, so it’s quite fast.

I’ve been knitting a lot, but have suddenly reached the end of the blue yarn for the jumper. Either I’ve misplaced a ball somewhere, or that’s all I had! I’ve barely gotten started on the sleeves, so if I don’t have more of the same yarn, I’m probably going to have to buy something that looks similar, though unlikely I’ll be able to get an exact match. It’s silly that I didn’t plan the right amounts from the beginning, I just assumed it would be enough somehow by roughly looking at it…

I was away most of last week for work, but still managed to get some knitting done. I've done one sleeve of the blue jumper, as I finally bought extra blue yarn to mostly match the body. I was worried the sleeve was too small, so I washed and blocked it before starting the second sleeve, and it's looking ok. I keep wanting to make more loose-fitting jumpers, and it keeps coming out too small. But the fit is reasonable, so I'll keep going.

The blue jumper is finished as the second sleeve is done. I’m happy with how it turned out. The washing and blocking process gave it a little extra stretch, so it fits nicely. I’m hoping it will be a good staple for the winter.

Hi there I'm Charlotte from London and I am a Millennial hobbiest. By that I mean I love making things, for both the process and the outcomes. On this blog I talk about all the things I'm working on and learning each week. On some projects I will go into a bit more detail on what I did and my experience through it.

Some facts about me:

- I am not a perfectionist, preferring to complete something than to attempt to make something flawless.

- I am in a constant cycle of building up inspiration, executing the ideas, then winding down to reflect and regenerate.

- I am interested in almost anything that can be made from scratch using nature / natural materials.

Thanks for stopping by!
