2025-10-21

I've been wanting to make a fair isle jumper for myself for a while now. I just hadn't yet found a pattern / colour scheme that I liked. I saw this jumper in a shop in Canterbury last weekend and really like it. It was a traditional country side shop for men i.e. barbour and the like. I think this pattern hits the rigth balance of traditional and modern, so I'm going to try to replicate it.

This jumper will probably be one of the longest, most intricate jumpers I’ve done. I’ve been working on it a lot, but so far I’m still on the yoke section. The wool is so thin and delicate, it’s almost going to be just an ornamental jumper. It’s easy for it to snag and break, so I will have to be uncharacteristically careful once it’s finished. As I’m knitting, occasionally I’m having to go back if I do something wrong in the pattern. It’s so small you can barely see the individual stitches, but I don’t want there to be any mistakes.

The jumper is coming along slowly. Lots of concentration is needed and good lighting to see the colours properly, so I don’t make mistakes with the ever-changing pattern. The jumper is turning out a bit smaller than I expected, but I can’t try it on yet. It should fit, but probably won’t be oversized.

2026-06-13

I’ve been away for three weeks I was only able to work on this jumper a little, but it's coming along. I’m hoping it’s going to grow significantly during the block wash because it’s currently almost child sized. I’m using the exact yarn and needles from the pattern so hopefully it’s all part of the process… I also know I’m not a tight knitter, so I generally don’t knit smaller than the average person. Anyway let’s hope.

Time is flying by. It’s been slow progress in this heat, but I’m almost done with the jumper. Still a bit dubious as to whether it’s going to grow in the block wash, but we’ll find out by next week. I’m knitting it with the inside out, in the round, as then the colour floats are travelling along the outside of the circle, so the knit is bigger.

The jumper is finished finally! I think I started it in April, after Easter, so it has taken me almost three months to get it done. I’ve blocked it, to try to stretch it out a bit, and while it’s not oversized at all, it fits. The neckline is much too wide, which seems to be how the pattern intended, but I didn’t like it. I sewed in a small elastic around the top to cinch it in a bit. Overall, I love the colourwork, its a beautiful pattern, I like the light weight fine yarn, but yes I would have liked it bigger. I’m hoping I’ll get some use out of it in the autumn.
